TPF Ambassador: Abby Smith

Abby Smith

Abby Smith is a senior at Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School, where she’s involved in a variety of clubs and teams including Social Justice Club. “I love to travel and take advantage of opportunities that allow me to expand my perspective and see the world from different angles.”

Why did you decide to become an Ambassador?

I have volunteered in food service prior to volunteering with The Patachou Foundation, but something about the experience serving with the foundation speaks differently to me. Volunteering with The Patachou Foundation is not simply a chance to serve nutritious food at a school, but rather, an opportunity to sit down and get to know the children served through a meal. The meaningful experiences I’ve had volunteering prompted me to deepen my involvement with the foundation.

How did you first hear about The Patachou Foundation?

A couple of years ago I attended the Speakers Forum with a board member who knew I had been volunteering in foodservice and was interested in learning more about food insecurity. The information presented at the Speakers Forum struck a chord with my interest in social justice and I finally began volunteering with the foundation this past winter.

What speaks to you about The Patachou Foundation's mission?

The goal of the foundation is not only to provide children with their necessary nutrition but also with companionship and conversation throughout the meal. On top of this, the meals served by the foundation are both nutritiously and environmentally sustainable. The Patachou Foundation works to combat food insecurity in Indianapolis in a manner that best benefits the children served without taking away from the environment.

Do you have any stories to share about your time as an Ambassador so far?

One of my favorite memories volunteering with The Patachou Foundation is telling a student that if he ate his green beans, it would make him stronger. The boy tried his vegetables and proceeded to feel his muscles. To his excitement, he felt stronger! He told all of his friends about the vegetable’s “magic,” and they ate their green beans too! Seeing the children enjoy foods that they were originally hesitant to taste is one of the most rewarding parts of volunteering.

What is your favorite family tradition involving food?

I love getting together with my extended family over the holidays to celebrate with food. Some of my favorite food traditions include baking (and eating) Christmas cookies with my cousins and always having a cheese board at family gatherings!

What was your favorite snack as a kid?

My grandma’s macaroni and cheese!
